By Olive Morris and Tom Rollins — April 14, 2021

Space has become increasingly critical to military operations since the 1960s, but in 2019, the Trump administration announced the creation of a Space Force, a sixth branch of the U.S. Armed Services with a grand new slogan—Semper Supra, meaning “Always Above.” Does America need a stand alone agency, or is this just political posturing?

Facts At-A-Glance

  • The Space Force

will take over existing military actions in space from the Air Force, Navy, and Army and focus on carrying them out more efficiently and successfully.

  • 200 personnel

within the military will transfer into the Space Force for the first two years. The majority of the staff—about 150 people—will come from the Air Force.

  • $15.2 billion

was the amount that the 2020 omnibus spending bill provided the Space Force in 2021, despite earlier estimates of the budget being much lower.
