About Us
Our Mission
American politics is broken, with the far left and far right making it increasingly impossible to govern. This will not change until a vibrant center emerges with an agenda that appeals to the vast majority of the American people.
This is the mission of The New Center, which aims to establish the ideas and the community to create a powerful political center in today’s America.
What We Do
Develop Policy
The New Center team produces original papers featuring policy ideas that can engender broad public support and make meaningful progress toward solving some of America’s toughest problems. These papers are published on the website on a regular basis and tackle a range of America’s toughest challenges.
History
In November 2016, Bill Galston, a senior fellow with the Brookings Institution and Bill Kristol, the founder of The Weekly Standard, penned a joint memo in which they made “the case for a New Center, one that does not split the difference between Left and Right, but offers a principled alternative to both.”
In subsequent months, Galston and Kristol convened an array of thinkers and leaders from across the political spectrum to help define the values and policies that animate The New Center, resulting in the Ideas to Re-Center America, which was released by the No Labels Foundation.
The New Center was created as a standalone independent entity in 2018 that develops original policy ideas and aggregates content.
